Boco and I played this game last night on IU campus. We did it all on my iPad. The map was an Adobe Ideas file, so characters could be moved around. The text was done in a note. We used voice recognition software which yielded some “interesting” results – often humorous. I wanted to test out voice recognition because I plan on running demo games at Gen Con this way.

From here on everything was spoken (with only a few typed corrections).

Tuesday night in Mexico: The Game

I’m playing this game with Coco at the Indiana Memorial Union on Tuesday night’s name 15th 2012. Coco is playing you: dime playing good and the hero of this game is the conquistador coming to Mexico City unrepentant coward comic sidekick. The first part of the game is about making it’s like a hero, the next part is about making us take the villain, and then the universe says no to the hero. The rest of the game is about overcoming that check.

The initial set up

It’s the first turn to the game and I’m going to start. I’m the good guy.

Don Juan is riding in the Mexico City and he turns to his servant Diego says Diego you unrepentant coward how is the day.? Diego shrugs and gives enough.

Don Juan moved into Mexico City followed by Diego

Don Juan Diego move into the city

Having this entire conversation with Mike was going on so I’ll review it for Mike so Don one is kind of bad ass you’re out and this is in establishing super’s character so what were going to have happened here is he is just writing into Mexico City to turn in his bounty on the giant gang of thieves that was terrorizing all the surrounding countryside they were pretty evil

Nope movement no movement is done Mr.

Diego says John what it was amazing how you kick their ass I didn’t believe that people could do somersault in the air in full armor until I saw you do it.

No movement is done Mr.

Well it’s all hard work and effort they got me this far online responded as he effortlessly did another backflip followed by a front flip on the seat of the source you see you can do it to Diego call me or such a sibling Howard.

They enter the plaza and meet Father Sebastian

Don Juan enters the main Plaza Mexico City where he sees father Sebastian. He goes up to him and says all father it’s good to see you.” Father Sebastian says all done on the hero of the day I’m so glad you’re here I’ve been having trouble with that pagan priests.

No movement is done.

You see Don wan father Sebastian continues the priests shipment of gold is late this quarter we’re going to have to do something about that if you know what I mean dot dot dot

No movement is done.

Don Juan sits back in the saddle and thinks all the corruption of the church is a terrible thing but I must obey. He means forward and says father Sebastian what can I do?

The princess moves into the Plaza but Don Warren and Diego move away from the plaza to discuss what they have to do from Sebastian.

Don Juan moves off to think - missing the Princess

It is now night Don wanted Diego are crouched outside of building whispering loudly Diego says I don’t think this is a good idea I mean really gone one replies yet but it’s under orders from the Catholic Church we cannot disobey them near as much as we can disobey God himself.

Challenge: everything is the same except that Don Juan says we can’t disobey God and the church.

Challenge results 10 to 6 Catholic Church and God are in fact separate entities thank you

Diego mean closer I have heard that the beautiful pagan Greece just boils virgin on this very street this is where we could lay a way to be.

Evil priest moves down into the city of the filed version or the street of the file. Maybe it is a city of the felt urgent I’m not really certain he is evil after all.

The Evil Pagan Priest move to the street of Despoiled Virgins

Why you got some that’s exactly why we’re here Diego how a stupid you you see the cauldron in which he boils the virgins is in fact solid gold and it’s our job to get it out.

No movement is done.

The priest leads a young girl looked young boy into a suspicious looking building. There is a lot of smoke coming out of the chip. I guess we all know what that.

No movement is done. This moves the game into the next phase where the universe has to say no hero just to make his life. Harder

Then we’re all done one says he quickly stands and does a front flip somersault in full armor over below wall separating them from the courtyard of the building now I’ll wait for me to yell that do you go after him alerting regards.

The old nurse moves into the scene on the street.

The Old Nurse enters the street

Don Juan is faced with 20 ain’t regards all carrying up city and blades sharpened up through well almost anything.

No movement is done here

Of the 20 guards one steps forward and speaks out in perfect Spanish Paul what do you hear what Don one doesn’t notice as he is speaking with this captain of the guard is the other 20 were sneaking up behind.

No movement is done.

Diego pre-op cries out Don wall and look behind you. Of course it is too late a Stone club comes down on Don Moran’s head and everything goes blah.

There is no movement but the Don Juan is now inside the building of the oil urgent.

And oil urgent is what Don one really needs in this situation as when he comes to he finds himself tight up and suspended from the ceiling above what is this a cauldron made of solid gold and whatever’s inside it is boiling.

No movement.

Don Juan you are a fool says the evil pagan priests. Don’t you know that I control everything. Don’t you know that my God is greater than your god. It should not be using?.?

No movement.

Don Juan uses momentum to swing himself a little bit and give him a further view of the room over by the doorway he sees his compatriots the sniveling coward Diego also being led in and tied up Diego has been thankfully dad.

Diego is now inside the building.

You are wrong evil pagan priest. My God is greater than your god. Is it not rude that when Cortez Kane you read him as a god.? If he was a god and surely the gods of God are greater than your poultry God.

No movement.

Yes it is as you say but what you do not realize is that I too will be a god by this time tomorrow the only ingredients I am lacking is the blood of the conquistador dot dot dot

No movement.

Don Juan goes gulp noticeably.

No movement.

The guard captain from earlier walked forward and Brandy’s into the city in the way he makes one incision then to a long gone ones are the blood begins to direct.

Unnoticed by the priest or his usual cards the old nurse sneaks in behind Don Juan.

The Nurse sneaks in behind Don Juan

The blood slowly drips in Golden Coldren making it phone: Steve change colors the evil priests and his guards become transfixed which allows the old woman a chance to loosen euros ball.

No movement.

At this point I think that we have said no to the hero and the game can move on to the phase where hero over his bonds literally in this case and begins to kick Hagan’s.

Free of his restraints Don one swings using the rope as leverage and text the head guard him right in the face now and does a nice acrobatic bureau at right off the handle however deposit when he sees that three other guards at Diego’s neck encircled by their city and back.

No movement.

Of course Don wands hands are tied figuratively not literally. He can’t continue the fight if it will cost the life of his friend Diego. Fortunately Diego, being a coward, begins to cry and Waylen Road around. This distracts the card so that they losing their grip on him.

No movement.

Sensing an opening on one charge of the group of guards who were supposedly restraining Diego meatballs right into the first one knocking him down but going down with that.

No movement.

As we know Don Juan has amazing amazing powers of acrobatics. He wools out of the fall flies through the air his feet hit the wall he jumps back in and lands 2 feet on top of the chamber meeting guards faces. They go down car.

No movement.

Don one doctor flawlessly delivers his famous catchphrase however the shot is ruined by the visible wires behind.

In the second take of the scene he carries off the flip flawlessly wire is removed by CGI and he delivers his
That will teach you you pagan dogs.

The priest backs out of the building and gets in a small boat dictates into one of nearby islands.

The Priest slips away...

Don lawn effortlessly defeats the remaining guards and boards out the contents of the solid Gold called her and then after releasing Diego from his bonds the two of them roll it down the long and winding path back to father Sebastian’s chapel but as they leave the house the camera zooms in on the old woman belle where a vial of the fluid that was in the cauldron previously glints.

I want to challenge this: Don Juan effortlessly defeats the remaining guards and as Diego and he pour the contents of the solid Gold folder out he sees that it contains the boil remains the two children install earlier and it makes him. Weep

7 to 4 the skeletons of been sublimated.

Diego and online return to other Sebastien side.

Don Juan returns to Father Sebastian with the gold

You have done well my son congratulate father Sebastian. Don Juan knows that he has done his duty but in his heart he also knows that’s no good can come of this.

I think we’re in the wrapping up of the game.

No movement.

The final shot is a simple black silhouette of the old woman raising the mile to relax and drink and then the credits roll.

As the credits rolled to hear maniacal laughter the background.

I’m back in the game.

As you can see, if you read the whole post, voice recognition is often wrong but for the purpose of gaming that doesn’t matter. Not having to write anything down sped the game up. We never lost energy. If we had had more players it would have been even better. This will certainly work for Gen Con and will be the first time anyone has done a game like that there.

I played this game on my new iPad. I took a picture of a map, imported it into an Adobe Ideas file, drew some icons for characters (one character per layer so I could move them around easily), and wrote the text in a note. I switched back and forth between the text and the picture.

The Mexico Game

This is a test game that uses a 1572ad map of Mexico City. There are three characters. The Conquestdor, The Princess, and The High Priest. Each character has a color coded head shot that can move around on the map.

The C is the hero. There are two players G (Good) and B (Bad). The hero wants to conquer and convert the city. Of course he also wants to save the girl. He starts outside the city. The other start in the central plaza. So now I will switch to the map and set it up.

The initial set up.

I just moved the characters. I will use the most recent rules. One player leads off a turn with an action. The other players may challenge it. This is followed by a movement.

G: The priest calls out the people and tells them they have been lied to the Spanish. Their god is a false god. Everyone believes him and they are angry.

Now a move. I’ll take a screen shot of the moves. I moved the hero into the city and moved the priest up to confront him.

The hero enters the city.

OUT B: The people start yelling with the hero. They surround him and start throwing stones.

This is not good so G will challenge this.

G: The people are cowed. They will not fight the Spanish. That is unless someone else doesn’t start first.

Heads! G wins. Now to find out if I can edit the previous text.

Movement: The hero moves in the face of the priest. The woman backs up so she is not caught in a crossfire.

Hero and Priest confront one another.

G: The hero talks down to the priest in front of the crowd. They see how fearless the hero is and how he owns the priest. The people take note of this.

B will not challenge this. He wants to add to it in the next turn but first there is move. The priest backs up a little.

The Priest backs down.

OUT. B: The priest stands up to the hero, so though the hero is an ass he does not totally own the priest. This fight is not over.

Challenge G: No, this one is settled. I own you!

Heads! G wins!

Movement: The woman moves back in closer. She is now VERY close to the hero.

The Princess cozies up to the Hero.

G: The woman senses my power. She pays all attention to me, the hero. I have won! Eat that priest man!!!

Movement: The priest moves away in disgust. The princess is a traitor!

The Priest retreats to plot in secret.

B: The priest takes his grudge underground. The fight will have to be go into the dark. You’d better watch out Mister her man!

I think that is enough for this game. I wish I had had the microphone to dictate it. Maybe I need to be connected to the Internet to be able to use that feature. I’ll check it out next week at work. Right now I’m at home, not on line.

I’ll post this game to the web page.

The map worked. I was able to move figures around pretty well. I used different layers to keep the movement elements separate.

They can’t remember who they are but they can still tell stories. This is VERY similar to the new MG I’m coming out with at Gen Con, Snapshot: 1969.

It used to be that Britain was stuck in 1916 on the Somme battlefield. It was the battle that wrecked the Empire. Here in the US we are still locked in 1944 at Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge. Those were our finest hours. We got to be liberators and desperate defenders at the same time.

For me though I’m stuck in 1915 and 1968.

When I was a kid the US was fighting the war in Vietnam. It was on the TV every night. By the time I start remembering, the war was unpopular. It was a scary thing that seemed to go on forever. I remember watching the draft on TV and when my birthday came up, very early, thinking “When I’m 18 I’m going to be drafted, sent to Vietnam, and be killed.” Of course the war was over long before I had to register for the draft but the fearful memory stuck.

Later on, in the 70′s, I saw the Australian movie “Gallipoli”. It’s a great film about the ANZAC landing in Turkey in 1915. The part that struck me the most was the final scene, in which the Aussies carry out a futile charge against machine guns. It hit that same feeling of helplessness and inevitability that I got watching the draft. I was just amazed at the bravery and the will it took to obey that order.

When I was young I though a lot about physical bravery. I was pretty certain I could do it if I had to but I didn’t want to volunteer for it. I suspect a lot of the games I’ve made over the years have been about that psychological conflict. As I’ve grown though I’ve come to respect the bravery of unarmed conflict more. Obeying orders and self sacrifice is compelling but deciding a course of action without power, being willing to sacrifice your life, and carrying it out in the face of overwhelming force impresses me more.

When I game now I’m more interested in what people build than with what they destroy. I’m more impressed with how they use soft power than guns. Will they face the horror? What will they do the save the world?

I think I’m still walking slowly towards that imaginary machine gun nest but now I’m doing it unarmed and not under a flag of truce.

Interesting psychology, don’t you think?

My wife Terri and I are going to present at the Annual National Institute on Social Work and Human Services in Rural Areas conference in the week of July 15th in Nashville Indiana.

The presentation shows participants how to use a simple Matrix game to build up collaboration and communication between local providers to deal with crises. It should help build up liason relationships and help everyone learn about the capabilities and limitations of everyones agencies. I’m going to make it very Indiana focused so we will talk about tornados, floods, and the like rather than hurricanes. I’ll also include the potential though for it to be used to look at epidemics, protests, and home grown terrorism.

I’m really looking forward to this. I think Matrix games can be a great resource in serious fields.
